HMS Ark Royal heads for Aliaga

The people of Portsmouth, England, on Monday turned out to bid farewell to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, destined for a Turkish scrap yard after its decommissioning two years ago.

The Invincible class carrier was a victim of a 2010 defense review that recommended scrapping the vessel and selling its Harrier jump jets (they were subsequently sold to the U.S.). Ark Royal's sister ship, HMS Illustrious, is due to be decommissioned next year, and a new class of British carrier, designed to launch and recover the F-35 joint strike aircraft, won't come into service for nearly a decade.

"HMS Ark Royal led UK naval forces during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and saw active service in Bosnia. The Invincible-class aircraft carrier was built by Swan Hunters in 1981 on the River Tyne and was named by Queen Elizabeth.

"Nearly 30 years later, the government then axed the famous warship in the 2010 Strategic Defense and Security Review. It is the most expensive warship built in the United Kingdom, costing a staggering £320million.

"There had been hopes HMS Ark Royal could be preserved as a museum ship, but the Ministry of Defense said she was in too poor a condition.

"Other proposals to reuse the ship included turning her into a commercial heliport, nightclub, school, or a casino."

Record scrapping of container shipping

A record number of container ships, including increasingly younger
vessels, is set to be scrapped this year, but this won’t reduce the
current oversupply of vessels, according to industry analyst Alphaliner.

Scrapping is likely to reach 450,000 20-foot-equivalent units if
the current pace of demolition continues, surpassing the record
381,000 TEUs removed from the world fleet in 2009.

In the first four months of 2013, ships totaling 195,000 TEUs have
been scrapped or de-celled. The average age of such ships
has fallen to a low of 22 years, compared with 25 to 30 years historically.

The surging scrapping rate is largely attributable to an increase
in the number of 3,000- to 5,000-TEU vessels being sold to
breakers’ yards, with 30 ships of this size sold for scrap so far
this year, including the 4,714-TEU 1990-built Maersk Malacca, the
biggest container vessel to be scrapped in capacity terms.

The Maersk Malacca’s sister ship, Maersk Merlion, is also due to
be scrapped when she comes off charter later this month.

Trading prospects are expected to remain poor, with the 3,000- to 5,000-TEU
Panamax sector the weakest segment because of oversupply as
shipowners opt for larger post-Panamax tonnage.

Five 4,528-TEU ships owned by APL also are set to be scrapped
in the summer after ending their deployment on the Far East-U.S.
East Coast service via the Suez Canal. They will be replaced by larger
8,000- to 9,000-TEU vessels.

Despite the record scrapping rates, the total capacity due to be
deleted from the world fleet still trails deliveries of new ships by a
ratio of 1:3, Alphaliner said.

Apl to scrap four container ships

APL has announced it will scrap four US-flagged containerships as the American retreat from Iraq and Afghanistan reduces military cargo. APL said it continues to have ample US-flag capacity to handle diminishing military shipments from Afghanistan and Iraq. "APL remains 100 per cent committed to the US flag. It's part of our heritage," said APL vice president Eric Mensing. The 4,300-TEU ships, the President Adams, President Jackson, President Polk and President Truman, built 30 years ago, were among the first postpanamax containerships (recalling the day when APL was known as the American President Lines) which are now operated by APL's US division.
